Term 3 January 2019 Newsletter

Learning     Friendship     Honesty     Respect     Positivity

Welcome back everyone!

We are off to a busy start here at St Marnock’s and I am sure the children have been a little tired at bedtime …hopefully!

Stem School of the Month

Great news announced as we finished up for the Festive Season when it was announced that St Marnock’s was December STEM School of the month.  The reasons for this accolade can be viewed @STEMglasgow E-bulletin. So very much deserved!

Our Twitter photos bear witness to this, please have a look if you can! Thank you to Dr Webster for leading.

Muga Pitch

The multi use games area is about to be installed. The work is estimated to start on 21.01.19. It will cover our blaze pitch and be a sizeable 40X36 metres! It will take 6-8 weeks to complete. The linings/markings will show Tennis Court, Basketball court, Football pitch and Netball court.

There will be a Security guard on site whilst works are in progress. The children are very excited and will make full use of this new resource.

£500 Grant from Scottish Book Trust

Mrs Walker, Principal teacher, has secured another grant of £500 to develop our Literacy Curriculum. It will allow for an author visit and link splendidly to the imminent Wee Write Festival, which we attend annually.

G.F.T. Film Festival

Mrs Maclean has secured visits for most classes to the Glasgow Film Festival in February. Another great learning opportunity beyond the school environment.  I am sure the children will enjoy!

Lourdes School Visits

Those P7 children who intend transferring to Lourdes Secondary have been invited to visit the Art and Technology departments in the near future. More information to follow.

St Paul’s Secondary

Our P7 will receive some visits from the Maths department staff as part of transition work.

P7 Lockerbie Manor

A letter has been issued separately to P7 parents/carers advising of the P7 Residential trip to Lockerbie Manor. Please attend a short, information session on Monday 21 January at 3:15 (children too) if your child will be going on this popular experience. The trip is from Monday 20th until Wednesday 22nd of March and Miss Deeney and Miss Gaffney will accompany the children.

Sacraments update

P7 Confirmation at St Robert’s on Tuesday 14th May 2019 at 7PM

P4 First Communion dates to be set by Fr. Kane

P3 Reconciliation dates to be set by Fr. Kane

The school follows the guidance given from the diocese in that lessons specific to the stage and Sacrament are delivered to the children at that stage, regardless of whether they receive the Sacrament or not, as it is part of the Religious Education Curriculum.

Please note it is necessary to communicate with Fr. Kane to enrol your child for any Sacrament. These are Church celebrations which the school fully supports.

Mass

We will attend St Conval’s 10.00am Mass on Wednesday 30th January 2019. Please let the school office staff know if you can help accompany us, to and from church. As always, we invite you to attend with us.

P1-3 Family Learning

Following on from the successful Maths and Literacy games sessions in Term 2, there will be further opportunities for P1-P3 parents/carers to attend Family Learning.  The focus will shift to learning about how maths concepts are taught and can be supported. Please sign up! Refreshments to tempt will be available. A letter has been issued separately with further detail.

Health and Safety

In the interests of health and safety, please encourage your child to exit the school promptly and safely at 3pm dismissal. Children, especially our younger pupils, should remain under the close supervision of their parents/carers when leaving.  In addition, whilst there is staff presence in the playground from 8:45, children should be encouraged to keep safe and respond to parent/staff requests, if being directed to play safely. Further reminders will be given to all children at assembly.

Staffing updates

Mrs McCreery (DHT) will commence Maternity Leave on Tuesday 15th January.

Miss Roan will commence Maternity Leave on Monday 21st January. Cover has been requested to the Supply Team and I will update the parents/carers of any developments. Mrs Cawood and Mrs Smith will teach in P3/2, in the meantime.

Miss Young, our new teacher will start on the 8th February.

Interviews for acting Principal teacher post as a result of Mrs Carr’s taking on the acting (DHT) position will be held on Friday 18th January and there are 3 internal Candidates.

Dr Webster commences her Principal Teacher’s role when Mrs McCafferty retires on 15th February.

Dog Fouling

The Janitor has reported dog fouling in the school grounds, e.g. on pitch and pathways. This is due to people using the school, in the evenings and at weekends, to walk dogs, allow them to run free and foul our lovely school. It is shocking and beggars belief. If you spot this please let me know and your advice will be treated with the utmost confidence. Alternatively, you can report the culprit(s) to the local police.

Vandalism

The school continues to experience broken glass from alcohol bottles in the car park/playground, damage to exterior safety lights and attempts a forced entry. Again, unwanted ‘visitors’ in the evenings and at weekends are to blame.

New anti-vandalism roll bars have been fitted to stop anyone getting on to the roof.

Our school benefits from a large playground but it is a magnet for vandals. Please, as a community, report anyone causing damage.

Important Dates

Please find attached some useful dates for Term 3.

Health and wellbeing

Mrs Carr, Principal Teacher, has been busy coordinating and promoting the school’s SNAG (Scottish Nutrition Action Group). She leads a group of children who aim to improve our health and wellbeing in school. Please help and support by continuing to dissuade your child from bringing multiple snacks and juices to school.  We allow one small snack and promote fruit and water/milk/fruit juice. Your child will be asked to return home, any more than this.

Indoor Shoes

Please provide for your child, if you have not done so already. Your help is appreciated.

Finally, we look forward to a fruitful Term 3 with our key focus on raising attainment, celebrating achievements and nurturing all our children. Your partnership in this work is highly valued, thank you.

Kindest regards
